As the COVID-19 coronavirus continues to spread, health officials are sharing personal health and cleaning tips to stop the disease from growing.

But even without a global illness, it is still a good idea to regularly clean the front and back of your phone to remove any germs that may be present.

This is because two thirds of New Zealanders use their phones comfortably while going to the bathroom. And while they may wash their hands afterwards, they are unlikely to clean their phones.

The New Zealand consumer has padded the surfaces of some phones and improved the results on petri dishes. Although they didn't test what was growing, they found bad looking bacteria.

To protect yourself and stop germs from spreading, there are quick and easy ways to clean your phone's screen.

The best way to disinfect your phone is to use a soft, slightly damp microfiber cloth, Consumer NZ recommends. This method kills most germs on your phone.

If your phone has a case, you can remove and clean it. However, you should let it dry completely before putting the phone back in.

Apple says you should avoid towels, abrasives, and paper towels, as everyone is at risk of scratching their phones.

It also warns against the use of sprays, bleaches, and abrasives, and you shouldn't over-clean your screen.
