Coronavirus: The emergency doctor gives advice on self-isolation at home during the COVID-19 pandemic

It's not like summer vacation.

For many people trying to protect themselves and others from the spread of the new coronavirus, the first full day of isolation at home seems surreal.

A local emergency doctor showed ABC7 what restraint should be. Group phone calls help to break the monotony of not having a school. And for many families who stay at home in these circumstances, this is new territory.

"We need to practice good self-isolation, which means you have to stay at home unless you have to leave home," said Dr. Anthony Cardillo, CEO of Mend Urgent Care.

The governor asks California seniors to isolate themselves and close the bars

Cardillo said social distance is crucial over the next two weeks. Preventing the spread prevents our health system from being overwhelmed. Think of him as a new baby.

"You won't take this baby outside," he said. "You don't take her to the mall. Not many people come to kiss and kiss the baby."

Precautions become more restrictive if you have someone who is sick at home. Whether COVID-19 or flu, doctors say a sick person should try to limit their movements in a room.

"And everyone should also make sure to wear masks and gloves, wash hands, wash face and nose," Cardillo said. "Make sure there is no means of transmission. Also wash all surfaces in your house, clean the bedding and clean all towels. This is all part of the automatic quarantine."

Empty store shelves show that a lot of people are panicking, but Cardillo encourages people to prepare for an earthquake.

He said, "You should have enough water and basic supplies in your house to last about a month if you stay in your house and isolate yourself."

According to Cardillo, while children use technology for fun while idling, adults should use it to control relatives and work from home.

"We should communicate via SMS, phone and FaceTime more than ever and use our technology more than ever," said Cardillo.
